— How to Think About Purified Water —
When using a hydrogen water generator, many people find themselves wondering:
- What kind of water should I use?
- Is tap water really okay?
After researching this topic, I found that from the perspective of hydrogen generation, the mineral content of the water itself plays an important role.
Especially for hydrogen water generators designed for drinking purposes, the type of water you choose can influence hydrogen production stability, taste, and the level of stress placed on the device.
Recently, I’ve also been asked frequently about Purified Water, so I’d like to organize my thoughts on that here as well.
What Are Minerals?
Minerals refer to components naturally found in water, such as calcium and magnesium.
These minerals are necessary for the body, but when it comes to hydrogen water generators, there is an important balance to consider:
- Too many minerals may not be ideal
- Too few minerals may also cause issues
For example:
- Water with very low mineral content
→ Hydrogen may not be generated consistently - Water with high mineral content
→ White residue can form inside the device, increasing internal stress
For this reason, hydrogen water generators tend to work best with water that contains a moderate amount of minerals.
General Guidelines for Water Suitable for Hydrogen Water Generators
For drinking-oriented hydrogen water generators, the following ranges are commonly considered easy to work with:
- TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): 30–100 mg/L
- Hardness: 10–60 mg/L (soft water)
- pH: 6.5–8.5
These numbers may look complicated at first, but the good news is that tap water in many regions of Japan already falls within this range, making it a practical starting point.
About Common Hydrogen Water Generators
Many hydrogen water generators commonly used today—such as Lita Aqua or Mariage by Doctors Man—are designed to generate hydrogen using a small amount of naturally occurring minerals in the water.
Because of this design:
- Water with almost no minerals
- Water with very high mineral content (hard water)
are generally not considered ideal.
In practice, water with a TDS level of around 30–80 mg/L is often reported as comfortable to use.
Can You Use Purified Water?
Purified Water sold in the U.S. is often produced by reverse osmosis (RO) and, in some cases, has a small amount of minerals added back afterward.
- Pure RO water (almost zero minerals)
→ Generally not suitable for hydrogen generation - Purified Water with a small amount of minerals added back
→ May be usable depending on its actual composition
Rather than assuming Purified Water is automatically suitable, it’s important to check the mineral content listed by the manufacturer.
Water Types Best Avoided
Based on manufacturer guidance and general device characteristics, the following water types are best avoided:
- RO water (reverse osmosis water)
→ Extremely low TDS, close to pure water, which may trigger errors or unstable operation - High-mineral waters such as Evian or Perrier
→ These are hard waters, typically sourced from Europe and higher in mineral content
On the other hand, tap water, drinking-grade Purified Water, and most standard mineral waters are generally fine to use without concern.

Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Water Matters
Using a hydrogen water generator doesn’t require expensive or specialty water.
What matters most is choosing soft water with a moderate mineral content.
- Tap water is usually sufficient
- Using a water filter can add peace of mind
- Moderation in mineral content is key
By keeping these points in mind, hydrogen generation tends to be more stable and the water easier to drink.
Since this is something used daily, there’s no need to overthink it.
Simply choose the water that suits your specific hydrogen water generator and continue comfortably.
