Hello from New York! I’m Shico, owner and therapist at easeNY.
On November 1, New York City came together for the New York City Marathon.
In the months leading up to race day, clients training for the marathon visited easeNY regularly for massage and hydrogen inhalation sessions.
Hearing about their training and their hopes for the race made me look forward to the day, too. Watching runners make their way through the Upper East Side, I found myself thinking, “Our clients are out there giving it their all,” and cheering them on in my heart.
Preparing for a marathon involves more than running. Nutrition, sleep, and time to care for the body also matter. One topic that connects exercise and body care is reactive oxygen species, often called ROS.
Our bodies produce ROS naturally. They play useful roles in immune defense and in signaling that helps the body adapt to exercise. However, when their production exceeds the body’s antioxidant defenses, the resulting imbalance is called oxidative stress.
Molecular hydrogen is being studied in sports science because of its relationship with oxidative stress. The Molecular Hydrogen Institute (MHI), where I study molecular hydrogen, also describes hydrogen’s selective antioxidant properties in its educational materials.
Understanding the necessary roles of ROS while exploring how hydrogen might be incorporated into everyday body care is a subject I continue to study with great interest.
After many years as a massage therapist, it remains a joy to care for people working toward something meaningful to them.
