Today, I’d like to be a bit candid and discuss some common “malfunctions” that can occur with hydrogen devices.
Even brand-new, shiny hydrogen devices can sometimes produce very little hydrogen.
Despite purchasing the device because you believed in hydrogen,
experiencing “not getting the results you expected”
can lead to distrust in hydrogen itself.
I’m writing this deliberately because I want you to avoid that as much as possible.
Proper maintenance is essential for hydrogen devices
Whether currently in use or brand new, hydrogen devices require regular and proper maintenance.
Neglecting this can make them difficult to use as intended and make it harder to use them at their intended performance level.
First, regarding regular maintenance for devices already in use: the basic methods are outlined in the instruction manual.
However, some manufacturers may not provide sufficient explanation, so we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer if you have any questions.

For example, take LitaAir, which we handle.
This model enjoys very high sales volume and widespread use within Japan.
However, neglecting regular maintenance (cleaning) can lead to reduced hydrogen production.
The most important thing first
“Do not leave it unused for extended periods”
Many hydrogen devices develop scale (mineral deposits) on their electrodes if not used regularly.
Once scale builds up, cleaning requires considerable time and effort.
If you cannot use it for inhalation, be sure to run it at least once or twice a week.
About LitaAir’s Self-Cleaning Mode
LitaAir has a self-cleaning function. Please run it approximately once every two weeks.

The primary purpose is to drain all the water from the tank and replace it with fresh water.
Even if you cannot perform the self-cleaning procedure, please ensure you change the water regularly.
Households with pets should take particular care.

In households with pets, fine hair floats in the air and can get into the water during refills.
At my own home, seeing cat hair on the shelves makes me realize just how much is floating around.
This can also lead to bacteria or mold growth, so regular water changes are very important.
Recommended Cleaning Method
The recommended method is self-cleaning using Lita’s dedicated cleaning solution.
If the dedicated solution is unavailable, diluted citric acid can be used as a substitute. However, incorrect dilution ratios may affect electrode condition.
Therefore, using the dedicated cleaning solution is generally recommended.
If you absolutely need to know the correct citric acid dilution ratio, please contact us individually.
Hydrogen Production After Cleaning
After cleaning with the solution, performing 1-2 hydrogen production cycles may restore output levels.
Even if levels don’t immediately return to normal, they may fluctuate and eventually stabilize as you continue production and inhalation.
Importance of Regular Maintenance
Once contamination occurs, cleaning becomes more labor-intensive.
Since you have purchased (or rented) this equipment,
– Frequent use
– Water replacement every two weeks
– Monthly cleaning
will help ensure more reliable and prolonged use.
Regarding Actual Measurement Data
The photo shows the results measured with a hydrogen analyzer on a LitaAir unit left unused for 2-3 weeks at our facility.
While the maximum generation capacity is 4000, it was only producing around 800 at that time.

The following photo was taken immediately after cleaning with the cleaning solution, and it still measures approximately 1800.

After that,
Generated twice → Approximately 3500

The result was:
5th attempt → recovered up to 4000.

About Hydrogen Measurement Devices
Ideally, we would visualize hydrogen production using a measurement device like this, but reliable, high-quality devices are expensive.
The UP Corporation hydrogen gas measurement device we use costs approximately ¥100,000.
That said, the method introduced here makes routine maintenance easier.
Caution is Required Even with New, Unused Equipment
In fact, even unused (new) hydrogen equipment may require maintenance.
Even if water wasn’t present at the factory, prolonged storage can sometimes reduce hydrogen generation efficiency.
When we measured our own inventory, many inhalers showed significantly lower values than normal.
Since then, we perform the following on all inventory items before sale:
・Regular hydrogen generation
・Measurement using a detector
Maintaining over a dozen devices constantly is honestly quite labor-intensive. However, we take this responsibility seriously to ensure our customers can purchase with confidence.
