What I Couldn’t Fit Into the Column
In the first newspaper column, I introduced the basics of hydrogen, but due to space limitations I couldn’t fully explain the different types of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).
This post will expand on that point and explore how hydrogen interacts with ROS.

Good ROS and Bad ROS
When people hear “ROS” or “oxidative stress,” they often think of something harmful—wrinkles, age spots, or even cardiovascular disease.
Indeed, excessive ROS can damage cells and accelerate aging.
However, not all ROS are harmful. Some play an important role in defending the body. For example, ROS help the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses.
In other words, ROS are not all bad—they are essential when balanced.

Hydrogen’s Unique Action
This is where hydrogen stands out.
Many antioxidants, like vitamin C or polyphenols, neutralize ROS indiscriminately, which means they can also suppress the “good” ROS that our body needs.
Hydrogen, however, is said to act selectively. It neutralizes only the harmful ROS, while leaving the beneficial ones untouched.
When I first heard about this, I thought, “That sounds too good to be true.”
But clients often tell me, “It feels safe because there are no side effects,” which reinforces the idea that hydrogen’s selectivity is a remarkable strength.

Everyday Impressions
Although this may sound complex scientifically, in daily life it feels simple:
“Remove what is harmful, keep what is helpful.”
For example, during breaks between my massage sessions, I sometimes use hydrogen inhalation and feel a lightness in my body.
One client once said, “I’ve tried many supplements, but hydrogen feels different—it doesn’t leave me drained.”

Conclusion
ROS are not entirely bad; they also protect our health.
What makes hydrogen unique is its ability to neutralize only the harmful ROS while preserving the beneficial ones.
In the next post, I will share why hydrogen can reach deep into the body—thanks to its tiny molecular size and permeability.
