Hello. In the previous column, I explained hydrogen inhalation as a way of introducing molecular hydrogen through the lungs and into the bloodstream.
This time, I would like to talk about one of the easiest and most familiar ways to incorporate hydrogen into daily life: hydrogen water.
Hydrogen water is water that contains dissolved molecular hydrogen, or H₂. After hydrogen water is consumed, some of the dissolved hydrogen can be absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, including the small intestine, and enter the circulation. From the intestinal circulation, absorbed substances generally pass through the portal system toward the liver before continuing into the wider circulation.
This is one important difference between hydrogen inhalation and hydrogen water. Hydrogen inhalation uses the lungs as its primary entry point, while hydrogen water is taken in through the digestive system.
I find it fascinating that the same molecular hydrogen can enter the body through different routes depending on how we choose to incorporate it.
Hydrogen water is especially easy to include in everyday life because it can be consumed just like regular drinking water. However, molecular hydrogen is extremely small and can escape from water relatively easily. For this reason, how hydrogen water is produced, stored, and consumed can be important when considering hydrogen concentration.
There are many types of hydrogen devices available today. Some hydrogen machines are designed specifically for hydrogen inhalation, while others can also produce hydrogen-rich water. I personally use both hydrogen inhalation and hydrogen water and choose between them depending on my schedule and daily routine.
So, is it better to “breathe” hydrogen or to “drink” it? I do not believe everyone needs to choose only one. Understanding the characteristics of each method can help you decide what is practical and sustainable for your own lifestyle.
In the next column, I will introduce the hydrogen bath and look at how hydrogen may interact with the body when the skin is exposed to hydrogen-rich bathwater.

I hope that hydrogen may continue to become one gentle option that fits naturally into everyday life.
