🌈Vol. 3: Challenging the "Fate of Cats," Chronic Kidney Disease: Protection of Oxidative Stress and Renal Function

Hello! I am Jun, a health industry salesperson who is deeply committed to the mission of “how to convey the latest science in the most easy-to-understand way” every day! The previous article on “Canine Atopic Dermatitis” received a great response on social media and other platforms. Thank you very much. It seems the desire to care for precious family members while minimizing the risk of side effects is a feeling we all share.

For this third installment of the series, I would like to tackle an extremely serious theme that is unavoidable for owners living with cats. That is “Feline Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).” I will explain in detail, incorporating a researcher’s perspective, how hydrogen stands up to this disease, which is often called the fate of cats.

1.Why Cats Cannot Escape “Kidney Disease”

As anyone who owns a cat has likely heard at least once, it is said that approximately one in three elderly cats suffers from kidney disease. Because their ancestors lived in the desert, they developed a highly advanced ability to concentrate and excrete urine so they could survive on minimal water. However, as a trade-off, a constant and heavy burden is placed on the kidneys—specifically the tissues called “nephrons” that filter waste products.

Unfortunately, once nephrons are damaged, they never return to their original state. Therefore, the primary goal of treatment is concentrated on a single point: “how to preserve the remaining function for as long as possible.”

2.The Masterminds Behind Declining Renal Function: “Oxidative Stress” and “Inflammation”

When kidney function begins to decline, waste products accumulate in the body, which triggers further inflammation, leading to a negative loop. In this process, a large amount of “bad reactive oxygen species (hydroxyl radical: ⋅OH),” which appeared in Vol. 1, is generated.

The kidney is an organ that is like a cluster of capillaries. When blood vessels are oxidized and damaged by bad reactive oxygen species, blood flow worsens, leading to further death of nephrons. Stopping this “chain reaction caused by oxidative stress” is the key to slowing progression. This is where hydrogen comes into play.

3.Evidence of the “Renoprotective Effects” Brought by Hydrogen

In Japan, the effectiveness of hydrogen has been researched even in medical settings for humans (particularly in dialysis treatments, etc.). That knowledge is now being applied to veterinary medicine.

With its overwhelming penetrating power, hydrogen reaches the capillaries deep within the kidneys and neutralizes bad reactive oxygen species with pinpoint accuracy.

According to research reports, in model animals that continuously consumed hydrogen water, there is data showing that levels of cytokines—an indicator of kidney inflammation—were suppressed, and tissue fibrosis (the process of becoming hard and non-functional) was reduced. This suggests that hydrogen is extremely promising as a brake on the progression of chronic kidney disease in cats as well.

4.Hydrogen Delivery Techniques for “Picky” Cats

The problem most frequently consulted by owners in the sales field is: “My cat is very particular about water and won’t drink it.” Especially for cats with poor kidney function, hydration is a lifeline. However, not just any hydrogen water will do.

* Freshness is key: Since hydrogen escapes easily, an ideal environment is one where it is freshly opened or where hydrogen can be constantly replenished, such as with an automatic water dispenser.

* The benefits of being tasteless and odorless: Hydrogen water does not change in taste or smell. Even for highly cautious cats, there are many cases where they drink high-quality hydrogen water surprisingly smoothly.

* Mixing with wet food: For cats that do not drink water, one method is to use food softened with hydrogen water or to utilize special aluminum pouch products that make it difficult for hydrogen to escape.

5.To Eliminate the Phrase “I Wish I Had Known Sooner”

Chronic kidney disease is a condition that progresses quietly and surely, to the extent that it is said 75% of kidney function is already lost by the time symptoms appear.

From a researcher’s perspective, the true value of hydrogen lies precisely in “prevention” and “early-stage care.” By making hydrogen a habit while they are healthy, you can routinely remove the oxidative stress placed on the kidneys. I believe this is the wisest investment to create a future where your cat can still groom themselves energetically even past the age of 20.

Jun’s Note

“Kidney disease = incurable = despair” is not the case. By borrowing the power of modern science and hydrogen, it is possible to extend the peaceful time with your beloved cat by even a day or a minute while managing the disease well. I have seen many cases as a salesperson, and hydrogen always responds to the efforts of owners who do not give up.

How was Vol. 3? There is still much more that hydrogen can do to protect the sparkling eyes of cats.

Well then, for the next installment (Vol. 4), we will completely change the stage and deliver the “Recovery Strategy for Racehorses.” Athlete horses that support a massive body of nearly one ton. I will introduce a surprising episode about the unexpected relationship between their muscle fatigue and hydrogen!
