🌈Vol. 2: Canine Atopic Dermatitis: Options to Avoid Over-reliance on Steroids

Hello! I am Jun, a health industry salesperson who feels the daily enthusiasm of the field firsthand.

In the first installment of this series, I talked about how “small” and “smart” the hydrogen molecule is. After its release, I received wonderful feedback from many people saying, “I feel refreshed now that I understand the mechanism at the molecular level!” This once again made me realize the high level of awareness everyone has regarding the health of their animals.

Now, for this second installment, our theme is a serious concern faced by many dog owners: “Canine Atopic Dermatitis.” This is a must-read for those who feel anxious about steroid treatments!

1.The Recurring “Itch” Loop: What Is the Cause?

Watching your dog constantly licking their body or scratching aggressively with their paws is truly painful for owners as well. Atopic dermatitis is a disease where the skin’s barrier function decreases due to genetic predisposition or environmental allergens (such as mites and pollen), leading to chronic inflammation.

Currently, the mainstream treatment at veterinary hospitals involves “steroids” or “immusuppressants.” While these are excellent for providing immediate relief from itching, many owners worry about the side effects of long-term use (such as thinning of the skin, polydipsia/polyuria, and effects on liver function). That is why veterinarians and researchers around the world are now focusing on hydrogen’s “fundamental approach to inflammation.”

2.Hydrogen’s “Inhibitory Power” to Calm Inflammatory Cytokines

Why is hydrogen good for dermatitis? The answer lies in its ability to turn off the switches that cause inflammation.

In atopic skin, immune cells run wild and release large amounts of inflammatory substances called “inflammatory cytokines (TNF-$\alpha$, IL-6, etc.).” This triggers further itching and inflammation, leading to a vicious cycle (the itch-scratch cycle).

According to research data, hydrogen is known to suppress the excessive production of these inflammatory cytokines. Instead of forcibly suppressing the immune system like a drug, it alleviates oxidative stress to soothe the haywire immune system back to a “normal state.” This is the gentle approach unique to hydrogen.

3.”Proactive” Skincare via Hydrogen Baths

What I recommend most in the sales field is “bathing (hydrogen baths)” using hydrogen water. As mentioned in Vol. 1, hydrogen is the smallest molecule in the universe. It is easily absorbed through the skin as well.

A dog’s skin is only about one-third the thickness of human skin and is extremely delicate. By soaking in a hydrogen bath, the following three effects can be expected:

* Deep Penetration: Hydrogen penetrating through the pores directly approaches inflammation in the dermal layer.

* Support for Barrier Function: It suppresses damage to cells caused by oxidative stress and aids in skin regeneration (turnover).

* Relaxation Effect: It calms the sensation of heat caused by inflammation and reduces the dog’s own stress.

Actually hearing voices in the field such as, “Since starting hydrogen baths, my dog no longer wakes up in the middle of the night from scratching,” reaffirms the incredible nature of this penetrating power.

4.”The Significance of Hydrogen” Shown by Clinical Data

Clinical research on hydrogen is also progressing at veterinary universities and clinics in Japan. For example, there have been successive reports that groups using hydrogen water for drinking or bathing in combination with conventional treatments were able to reduce steroid dosages or showed significant improvement in skin redness (erythema).

From a researcher’s perspective, this does not mean “hydrogen becomes a substitute for medicine,” but rather that “it becomes a powerful supporter to maximize the effectiveness of medicine while reducing the risk of side effects.” From the viewpoint of integrative medicine, hydrogen is an extremely ideal tool.

5.The Power of “Consistency” for Owners to Know

Hydrogen is not a powerful drug. It won’t magically cure everything in an instant, but by continuing steadily every day, the body gradually changes into one that is “resistant to oxidation” at the cellular level.

Based on my experience seeing many atopic individuals as a salesperson, I can say that skin care is about “patience.” Letting them drink hydrogen water, wiping the affected areas with hydrogen water, or giving them hydrogen baths a few times a week. This daily accumulation becomes the foundation for restoring the shine of your dog’s coat and creating healthy skin.

Jun’s Note

The most important thing in atopy treatment is for the owner to remain smiling. Hydrogen care can be easily incorporated at home and carries almost no concern for side effects. For those who feel, “I want to do something, but I’m afraid of strong medications,” I am convinced that hydrogen is the best first step.

How was Vol. 2? Seeing a dog, freed from “itching,” sleeping soundly is an irreplaceable joy. Well then, for the next installment, Vol. 3, we will focus on a theme that cat owners cannot avoid: “The Fate of Cats: Chronic Kidney Disease.” I will take an in-depth look at how hydrogen is involved in protecting renal function!
