Nice to meet you. My name is Jun, and I have joined this project from the Sales Department as a member of a new business initiative involved in the hydrogen health industry. I will be writing a series on global hydrogen research from the perspective of hydrogen’s potential in animals (ranging from pets to livestock and aquaculture), so I look forward to your interest.
I usually provide guidance on hydrogen products for humans, but over the past few years, the nature of the questions I receive from customers has changed dramatically. These are heartfelt voices concerning the utilization for beloved family members—namely, “animals”—such as, “It worked well for me, so I want to try it on my dog,” or “My senior cat is lethargic; is it okay to let them drink hydrogen water?”
What can be done for these precious partners who cannot express their physical discomfort in words? In fact, research on hydrogen for animals is currently spreading across the world at a speed beyond our imagination. Therefore, backed by the expertise of Japanese hydrogen researchers and incorporating my field intuition as a salesperson, I have decided to start an epic 50-part series.
In this memorable first installment, we will delve into the core of why “hydrogen” is needed for animals today.
- The “breakthrough power” possessed only by the universe’s smallest molecule
Hydrogen’s greatest and most powerful weapon is its small size. As the universe’s smallest molecule, hydrogen easily penetrates places that other antioxidants (such as vitamins C and E and polyphenols) cannot.
For example, the brain is home to a strict checkpoint known as the “blood-brain barrier (BBB),” which prevents harmful substances from entering, but hydrogen easily passes this checkpoint. Furthermore, it can even reach the mitochondria, the energy factories within cells and the source of reactive oxygen species.
We often hear the phrase “reaching every corner of the body,” but hydrogen is the only substance that can literally reach the nucleus of cells, ignoring physical barriers. This incredible delivery ability is the primary reason hydrogen is chosen for whole-body animal care.
- Intelligence: Targeting only the “bad” while leaving the “good” behind
Reactive oxygen species generated within the body actually have two faces: “good” ones that play a role in combating viruses, and “bad” ones that indiscriminately attack cells and DNA, causing aging and disease.
Conventional antioxidant supplements tend to neutralize both types of reactive oxygen species, but hydrogen is an extremely “intelligent” molecule. It reacts exclusively with hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH), the most aggressive and harmful reactive oxygen species in the body, and combines with them to convert them into harmless water (H2O).
H2 + 2OH → 2H2O
As this reaction equation shows, the only thing left is water. Even if taken in excess, there are no side effects, and it does not inhibit necessary biological reactions. This “selective antioxidant effect” is the medical basis for its safe use in delicate animals.
- From Japan to the World. A Revolution That Began in 2007
The days when people said, “Hydrogen is just water, right?” are over. In 2007, leading Japanese researchers Professor Shigeo Ohta and his colleagues published a report on the groundbreaking effects of hydrogen in the international medical journal Nature Medicine, giving birth to the academic field of hydrogen medicine.
Since then, thousands of academic papers have been published. Japan is a “hydrogen leader,” boasting the world’s most advanced knowledge and technology in this field. The hydrogen products we use every day are backed by a rigorous scientific foundation.
In this series, I will combine the easy-to-understand approach I developed in sales with the evidence of researchers, sharing the latest research findings from overseas.
- The Harsh Environments Modern Animals Face
Unlike their wild counterparts, modern animals face the same challenges as humans: stress, air pollution, processed foods (cat and dog food), and aging. All of these factors increase oxidative stress in the body.
Animals age several times faster than humans. Therefore, daily habits that reset oxidation can dramatically improve their quality of life. Hydrogen is not just a fad; it’s no exaggeration to say it’s a survival strategy for modern animals to live healthily.
- The 50-part journey begins now.
In Part 1, we introduced the basic “amazing” aspects of hydrogen. In the next part (Part 2), we’ll focus on canine atopic dermatitis, a major concern for pet owners, and explain how hydrogen soothes inflammation.
This series will cover surprising topics, from familiar pets like dogs and cats to athletic care for racehorses, methane reduction in livestock farming, and even improving survival rates in aquaculture.
We deliver information so thoroughly that you’ll be amazed, wondering, “A person in the health industry is writing in such detail!” For a future where you can spend as many days as possible with your precious companion, smiling (and wagging!) with a smile.
Jun’s Note
Hydrogen is not a drug. However, it is a unique and special partner that can address cellular oxidation, the foundation of life. If you read the first installment and want to know more, be sure to check out the next installment.
