What I Couldn’t Cover in the Newspaper Column
In the previous post (Blog 8-1), I talked about how long hydrogen can stay in hydrogen water
and why proper storage is essential.
In this article, I’d like to go deeper into a question I often receive:
“What should I look for when choosing a hydrogen water generator for home use?”

1. The Type of Generator Makes a Big Difference
Hydrogen water generators come in several formats, and the method used directly affects the hydrogen concentration, usability, and maintenance needs.
I will explain the main types of hydrogen water generators commonly used in households in a clear and easy-to-understand way.
◎ (1) Electrolysis Method (PEM System)
This is the most widely used method.
It generates hydrogen by splitting water through electrolysis.
Benefits:
- Can produce high-concentration hydrogen water
- Generates hydrogen quickly
- Easy to use for everyday hydration
Notes:
- Those using a pacemaker should follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance
- Depending on tap water quality, a filter may be necessary

◎ (2) Magnesium Reaction Method
This method uses metallic magnesium reacting with water to create hydrogen.
It is the same principle used in certain hydrogen bath products.
Benefits:
- Stable and high hydrogen concentrations
- Portable and convenient for travel
- Does not require electricity
Notes:
- The reaction produces slight heat—handle with care
- Water quality can affect performance depending on the product

2. Understanding Hydrogen Concentration (ppm)
As mentioned in the column, hydrogen concentration is measured in ppm (Parts Per Million).
1 ppm means 1 mg of hydrogen is dissolved in 1 liter of water.
Current home generators typically range from 1–10 ppm.
- What concentration should you choose?
It depends on your needs and lifestyle.
- Daily hydration: 1–3 ppm
- More consistent support: 4–7 ppm
- High-concentration use: 8–10 ppm
Rather than simply choosing the highest ppm, quality and consistency are more important for long-term benefits.
3. Taste and Smell Tell You Nothing — so Check the Specs
Hydrogen has no taste, no smell, and no color.
So it’s impossible to tell by drinking whether hydrogen is truly present.
This is why choosing the right device matters.
✔ Key points to check before purchasing:
- Whether the hydrogen concentration is verified by a third party
- The maximum ppm the device can reliably generate
- How long the water can retain hydrogen
- The material of the container (hydrogen escapes through many plastics)

4. Who Should Consider a Home Generator?
A home generator is especially useful for:
-
- People who want hydrogen water every day.
- Families who want to share hydrogen water.
- People who want reliable hydrogen without relying on pouches.
- Those who prefer generating hydrogen on demand at home.
5. Summary
Hydrogen water generators vary greatly in generation method, concentration, retention, and material.
Rather than choosing the most expensive device, it’s more important to find one that fits your lifestyle and daily routine.
In the next article (Blog 8-3), I’ll go deeper into:
- Why hydrogen water can support gum and oral care.
- How I use hydrogen water with a water flosser.
